Guide

How to measure – yourself or someone else

Even the best conversion fails if you start from the wrong size. A tape measure and five minutes are all it takes. Our guide covers every measurement with an illustration, steps for measuring alone and with a helper, and the mistakes people make most often.

Why clothing sizes are so confusing

A German 38 is a 40 in Paris, a 44 in Milan and a 10 in London. Three reasons why your own measurements are the safest starting point:

Every country counts differently

Germany labels clothes by body measurements in centimeters, the UK and the US use their own number series or inches, and Italy and France shift the count by a few numbers.

No binding standard

The European standard EN 13402 recommends body measurements in centimeters on the label – but it is not mandatory. Every brand picks the number on its own labels.

Cuts are different

Slim, regular, oversized: even within one brand, models fit differently. That is why the shop's own size chart is always the final check.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert clothing sizes between countries?

In the calculator above, pick the category (for example women), choose the sizing system you already know your size in, and tap that size. You immediately see the equivalent in US, UK, EU/German, French, Italian and Japanese sizing, plus letter sizes from XS to XXL.

Are EU sizes and German sizes the same?

For menswear and shoes, usually yes. For womenswear, not always: France, Belgium and Spain run 2 numbers above Germany (German 38 = FR 40) and Italy runs 6 numbers above (IT 44). If a shop only says “EU”, it usually means the German number.

What do letter sizes like S, M and L mean?

Letter sizing runs from XS (extra small) to XXL (extra extra large). Each letter usually covers two numeric sizes, and it varies more between brands than any other system.

How do I find my size without trying clothes on?

Measure your bust or chest, waist and hips – our step-by-step guide shows you how. Enter the numbers under “From measurements” in the calculator and it suggests the size that fits.

Are these conversions official?

No. There is no worldwide size standard, and every brand cuts differently. Our charts are carefully compiled guidelines. Before you order, always compare your measurements with the shop's own size chart.

Are my body measurements stored?

Only on your own device, in your browser's local storage, so you do not have to type them again. No measurements are sent to us or to anyone else. You can delete them at any time in the measurement log.
